LIPSTICK AND A HANDFUL OF BULLETS
by Lana Munroe

2021 Long Beach, 433pp, color photos, illustrations by Larry Norton, 6x9, hardcover, dj

After Lana Munroe and her husband, Jack, had a serious scare with cancer, they decided to live life to the fullest by traveling and hunting around the world. Their greatest adventures are collected in this book, which features twelve enjoyable vignettes written in a vivid and entertaining style.

In Mozambique, there are more adventures in the arrival hall than there are on the first few days of the hunt. Having dealt with sundry corrupt officials and retrieving “lost” passports, the duo are on their way to the bush, where they will have to sort out a buffalo wounded by a poacher.

Lana notes that “lions can run faster than you,” but it is hard to resist testing this theory when a male lion decides to press that point home in a most decided manner. Out of necessity, Jack and the PH stand their ground and try to settle the matter with a well-aimed bullet.

Not content with hunting only in warmer climates, the couple heads for the Arctic in search of muskox and polar bear. In the Canadian hamlet of Grise Fiord where polar bears have been known to roam through the town in the dark winter months, they find the hotel has frozen water pipes and the do-it-yourself-restaurant consists of an ice chest with packaged food that has expiration dates from half a decade ago. The muskox hunt seems relatively uneventful until a blizzard hits, the temperature drops to 75 below, and Lana is blown off her transport.  Hardly thawed out, the pair continues on a quest for a polar bear, spending thirteen more days on the ice in search of an old boar.

On a leopard hunt in Zimbabwe, a cat emerges at dark and heads straight for the blind. A desperate shot leads to a wounded leopard that instantly unleashes its fury on a charge to the blind. Their adventures with cats continue with a hunt in British Columbia for mountain lion in minus-22-degree weather. Here they also try for wolves, and they even attempt a driven wolf hunt.

Several trips for bears cumulate in a tense standoff in coastal Alaska where Jack and Lana confront a bear of considerable size. They then book a moose hunt during the “rainy season” in Alaska, which, they find, is almost any day of the year. Then there is a bongo hunt in the rainforest where getting to camp is more of a challenge than all the snakes and gorillas that will confront them once they arrive.

Customer Reviews

The author is an engaging writer who will keep even the most experienced hunters / readers, totally occupied. Review by South African PH
It is a fascinating & adventurous read about two of the most sincere
nature lovers, conservationists & hunters i have ever met, with a
tremendous appreciation for wildlife & people.

Both Lana & Jack are well known to me. In fact, i had the privilege to
guide them on both their lion & leopard safaris. Both safaris,
absolutely wonderful experiences.

Lana possess the uncanny ability to meticulously remember every detail
of each safari. With a professional hunting career spanning over 37
years, hunting Big Game in Africa, i have yet to experience the passion,
planning, energy & hunt ability of this lovely couple.

The author is an engaging writer who will keep even the most experienced
hunters / readers, totally occupied.

When Lana & Jack left Africa on their previous safari, it became a
poorer place. We all eagerly await their return in anticipation.

Well done Lana Munroe, well done Safari Press !!

I found this book to be a wonderfully entertaining and fascinating page turner! Review by Gifted Writer
Lana is a gifted writer who documents her experiences on hunting trips across the globe with her husband, Jack. Her genuine appreciation for nature and wildlife is imprinted on each page, relishing both the wild and adventurous experiences on the hunt, along with the quiet and tranquil moments as they immerse themselves in some of the worlds' most rugged, remote and untouched areas. If you have ever hunted in countries such as the Cameroons after Bongo; Zimbabwe after lioness, crocodile and hippo; Mozambique after deep forest buffalo and sable; Alaska after black and brown bear and moose; and the Artic after musk ox and polar bear, this book will take you back there! Or if you have ever wanted to hunt in these places and wondered what to expect and what to pack, this is the book to read.
I couldn't put this book down - each chapter is filled with a vivid account of their adrenaline filled, action packed experiences. From avoiding a lion ready to charge in South Africa to surviving a blizzard in the frozen Grise Fiord while in search of muskox, there are many heart stopping moments in the book which make you appreciate the grit and determination a good hunter (and observer) needs to possess when out in the wilderness. It's rare to read a book and have a physical reaction to these wild moments; I was often on the edge of my seat, transported to the adventure as if I was experiencing it firsthand.
I found this book to be a wonderfully entertaining and fascinating page turner!
