“Safari” is an Arabic word meaning a long journey into remote areas.

Safari is what this book is all about. It is dedicated to dangerous game, although not all the chapters are focused  on that subject but all describe the danger and excitement of an African safari. This book covers a wide range of topics, all of which affect the conservation of wild places and wild animals in Africa.

This is Robin Hurt’s third tome, but it is a book with a difference. Robin has invited a wide-ranging list of experts to share their experiences on safari, hunting, and the benefits of hunting for conservation. They are household names in the world of safari. For more than two-and-a-half years the production team at Rowland Ward Ltd. has been hard at work preparing the 30^th edition of its iconic Records of Big Game.  In order to create an “entirely new” record book, this one on African game animals, we decided to implement the following: We have included photos of the highest scoring heads, based upon a strict policy of ethics and aesthetics; we have made the book “user friendly” by completely reorganizing the layout of the book according to traditional methods used by naturalists and hunters as well as by biological kinship; we have created—with particular pride we might add—83 new maps featuring over 200 varieties of African game animals that illustrate accurate, current game distributions in great detail and full color; and, finally, we have completely reshaped the table of contents and index to make the search for a specific species easy to do.

Hunters and gun owners are particularly fond of proclaiming certain publications are the last word on their sport and this tome certainly comes close. The author’s first book,  African Dangerous Game Cartridges; became a modern standard reference on big bores.  African Medium-Game Cartridges, has around 380 color images and charts, it covers the 39 currently most popular .270, 7mm, .30 and .303 hunting cartridges in the greatest detail we know of ever attempted.  It covers not only the history, but the ideal loads, the right projectiles, how to reload them and the game it should be used for.

Lots of people love the mini Perfect Shot series of books, but since most of us hunt only a few animals at a time, most prefer to have just those pictures with us afield. We have been asked many times if we could come up with a card pack that would allow the hunter to carry individual pictures of the animals he intends to hunt on that particular day. We listened, and, thus, The Perfect Shot for Africa Card Pack was born!
